Since American cowboys set out for the new frontier, men’s western fashion has been modified and reshaped to meet evolving consumer needs. In America’s history, many factors have led to the desire for cultural heritage and a modified style. After a global lockdown, American men are now eager to return to the great outdoors with a renewed respect. The rise of western wear has never been stronger.

Upon reviewing the current style trends in men’s fashion today, it has become clear to me that western style has come to the forefront and will remain a strong style indicator moving forward into the spring/ summer 2022 collections and beyond.

This homegrown-rugged style has made a significant impact on luxury menswear in the USA, especially among younger generations and Gen Z. Celebrities like Lil Nas X, Ralph Lauren and other world-famous luxury menswear brands have all adopted the American west spirit.

The fall/winter season’s trend is western style. Urban cowboys are able to channel the instinctive flair of urban cowboys and use this style with precision and purpose. More to the point, the cowboy style has spearheaded many trends including cowboy hats, boots and belts— all the while capturing a unique sense of American spirit.

This distinctiveness of western style has created a rebirth of creatively centered around American culture. Mexico and the United States shaped and displayed a strong sense masculinity in the vast and free great outdoors. America is the only country that owns it. American born and raised.

Western fashion dates back to the 1850’s during the trek out west to take part in the California Gold Rush. This period was heavily influenced by outlaws, cowboys, and ranchers who chose to wear more durable, breathable workwear. However, it wasn’t until the 1950’s that western styles had become a trend, mainly due to the influx of Hollywood’s American Western movies. In Elvis Presley’s era, there was fashion with denim layers worn over each other, bolo ties, and suede or leather-fringe jackets reigned highest.

Since then, more singular elements of the look have made their way back into the fashion and lifestyle magazines as well as style influencers. The ’90s were obsessed with cowboy boots, 2010s brought back denim-on-denim, and now, for fall/winter 2021, the reemergence of cowboy looks, leathers, and plenty of denim are abound.

This season, designers are introducing a wide variety of vertically integrated product offerings and fresh trendier styles that attract a more creative, younger clientele. Some brands have established preservation techniques that preserve fine craftsmanship from years ago. Today’s brand codes combine heritage references with a modern sensibility that is both respectful, on-point, and undeniably American. What I find exciting is how new shapes and experimental details such as “hardware” embellishments that cement the look of refined masculinity. Technical performance specialized to focus today’s fast-paced lives of men has seen technological advancements. What I find exciting is how new shapes and experimental details such as embellishments can cement the look of refined masculinity.

The 2021 version of western wear in luxury menswear isn’t necessarily trying to dress like a cowboy, but it is about pulling some of their staples and incorporating them into your wardrobe for some flair. This can be directly correlated to the rise of cowboy boots for menswear. This can be directly correlated with the return to prominence of looser cut jeans such as the boot cut style.

Accompanied with cowboy boots is the revival of leather pants into many luxury menswear brands. Formerly considered strictly a “rock and roll” punk piece, leather pants have been included in many luxury menswear collections such as Amiri and Louis Vuitton. Last but not least is the incorporation cowboy hats in everyday menswear. A timeless staple in menswear, a cowboy hat now can be paired with so many varieties of daily casual or fashion forward looks. American Hat Company and Stetson make some of the finest hats in the industry with a wide selection of styles.

Western wear has reshaped the vision of the twenty-first century cowboy. It combines traditional techniques and the desire to convey a sense American nobility. America’s contributions to menswear continue their influence on a new generation of men who are more confident in their heritage and have a wider outlook for the future.

Fashion is ever-changing and always changing. Each generation brings new styles and trends to the forefront. Western wear will be a dominant trend in 2021, not only for the southern American man but also for menswear throughout the country. It has been adopted by the top luxury menswear brands and incorporated into their FW and SS collections. I believe this trend will continue to be popular.
