The Paris haute couture spring/summer 2022 shows were their usual heavenly display of bows, ruffles and feathers, but amongst all the tulle frou-frou, something fresh was afoot. Designers hit pause on the sugar rush, and embraced a reset moment: through stripped-back colour palettes and a refreshing body-positive outlook.
Some couturiers got feisty, joining the undressed dressing game that continues to tantalise the ready-to-wear industry. The leg reveal – a Noughties phenomenon beloved by J Lo and co – made a comeback, while other designers broke new ground with hyper-embellished playsuits that came over all David Bowie.
There were torsos flashes and wildly ornate tights, but the real signifier that anything goes this season came via Charlotte Casiraghi and her horse Kuskus, who opened the Chanel show with a canter that drew audible gasps – and much Instagramming – from the audience.
