Roman Ahcan knows some don’t like his gritty style. The Badgers men’s hockey senior isn’t changing it | Wisconsin Badgers Hockey

Ahcan was penalized three times instead of going to the box in Army’s match. One resulted in Jack Gorniak scoring the UW’s power-play goal. His aggressive play was more geared towards putting pressure on the opponent rather than recklessness.

Ahcan recognized the puck bounced back to an Army defenceman at the point following a faceoff and gave UW their first goal of series. Ahcan’s quick decision resulted in a turnover that sent him off for the races.

He seemed to be going to shoot on the rush left side, but his teammate Sam Stange was speeding down the middle of ice, and Ahcan connected with him for an in-line tap-in.

“A loose puck like that’s a 50/50 battle and you always want to be the one to win that,”Ahcan.

UW won more against Army than it did against Michigan Tech. This is one of the key differences in the two wins and the two losses that opened this schedule.

“Roman did what he needed to do as a leader to help our team gain confidence,” Granato said. “I think that’s the biggest thing: Set the example on the competitiveness and the battle level and people will follow.

“This is what we need to see from our older players. That’s why I believe it was such a difference this weekend. The other guys saw it and wanted to be a part of it.
