Kozhikode: The decision of authorities in Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Balussery to embrace gender-neutral uniform had made headlines even in international media outlets. Imbibing the same spirit, a section of women employees of the Corporation came for duty, dressed up in gender-neutral outfits – pants/jeans and shirt on Tuesday.
Even those who used to regularly wear saree and churidar, wore pants/jeans and shirt as part of the decision taken by Kerala Municipal and Corporation Staff Union’s women committee. The committee plans to adopt this outfit style at least once a week.
“Not to prove anything. Individuals have right to choose their outfits as per their interest, right? The general notion is that only saree and churidar are the outfits that comply with office etiquette. However, there is nothing like that. And we dressed up like this,” said the committee convenor N Sashitha.
According to the women staffers, the implementation of the decision was easy as chairperson Subaida, mayor Dr Beena Philip and secretary KU Bini and all extended their whole-hearted support.
Meanwhile, the committee is also going to be trained in self-defence by Kerala Police.
