Fashion Mogul Peter Nygard Agrees to Extradition to U.S. to Face Sex Charges

TORONTO—Peter Nygard, the Canadian fashionRetailing executive, he agreed to be extradited into the U.S. to face charges of sex traficking and racketeering.

On Friday morning, Mr. Nygard, 80, consented to extradition. This is more than nine months after he had been indicted in Manhattan federal Court and taken into custody in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

U.S. prosecutors accused him of criminal misconduct involving dozens victims in the U.S.A., Canada, and the Bahamas.

Mr. Nygard wasn’t in the courtroom in Winnipeg, but appeared via a video feed. A monitor set to the side of the courtroom showed him wearing a blue mask and sitting in a blue room, according to a video of Friday’s hearing posted by the Manitoba Courts.

Mr. Nygard’s lawyer, Brian Greenspan, said in court that Mr. Nygard maintains his innocence.

“This process can now move forward in order for him to face trial in the United States on an expedited basis, and for him to have an opportunity to raise his defense and to challenge the truthfulness of the evidence which has been brought against him,”Mr. Greenspan.

Nygard International was established in Canada by Mr. Nygard in 1967. After his Manhattan offices were raided as part of an international investigation into sex-trafficking, he resigned as chairman.

It is not clear when Mr. Nygard will travel to the U.S. The Toronto Police Service on Friday said it has issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Nygard’s arrest. According to a Toronto Police press release, Nygard will face six counts of sexual assault in Toronto and three counts forcible confinement.

Mr. Greenspan said during a briefing with reporters on Friday broadcast by local networks that it is up to Canada’s federal government to decide how it wants to handle the situation.

Mr. Greenspan indicated that the minister could either wait for the outcome or send him to the U.S. to be charged in Canada.
